The Ball

We arrived at the ball fashionably late for no other reason than we didn’t want to stand outside in the snow in February waiting to enter.  When we entered the vestibule of the venue we immediately knew we were going to stand out given that the majority of costumes in view were in darker Victorian colors.  Thankfully we were in wigs and masks so that if our idea was misguided, at least no one would know who we were.  We received some positive feedback pretty quickly but were still a bit unnerved at how different we looked.  We ascended the stairs and entered the hall.  It was amazing.  There were extremely high ceilings covered in mosaic tiles, pillars, aerial acrobats and a sea of great costumes.  What we never anticipated was having random strangers approach us immediately asking to take photos with us.  And that is how the rest of the night went.  We walked the hall for the next four hours taking pictures with so many different people and talking about our costumes.  The feedback was more than we had ever expected and it certainly helped that Gavin was an amazing marketeer for us.  Several men stopped Gavin and asked him where he got is waistcoat as there are very, very few options for men when it comes to masquerade balls.  He would happily respond by letting them know that his “Three Fairies” made his costume.  Many people asked for business cards or a website - we didn’t have either.  But we knew after that night that our lives were about to change directions.

As for the ball itself, we had an amazing time.  It was so cool to float around in an alter ego and watch others do the same.  There was little conversation about the real world and it felt awesome to inhabit a different mindset with so many others for a period of time.  We also learned some things, such as heels for this type of event that doesn’t have seating are a really, really bad idea.  Also, Gretchen and to some degree Shanon are lethal with fairy wings.  It turns out if you wear fairy wings that are not flexible, it is quite possible that the people standing around you are likely to get clipped by the wings (especially when dancing) and you will spend a large portion of the evening apologizing to people for hitting them.  In addition, if your venue happens to have narrow stone hallways, it is quite likely that you will hear the metal veins of the wings scrape down the walls much like fingers on a chalk board.  One would think that if you heard that noise you would adjust your path, but Gretchen and Shanon were having too much fun to take notice.  Mel on the other hand, cringed every time she walked behind and she knew that the beautiful wings she had worked so hard to create were being obliterated by her partners in crime.  A fitting obituary has been written for the wings as their beauty was absolutely destroyed and as a result, Gretchen has been told that she needs to start with “training” wings at future events until she learns how not to kill people and product.

As we walked throughout the venue that night we would often see individuals point and call out to the “Three Fairies”.  It made us all smile as we knew we had achieved our goal and so much more.  We left knowing that we had stumbled onto something that was bigger than any of us individually.  The next day as we checked Facebook pages we could see shots of red, blue and purple, most of which were from people we had never met.  It took but mere moments for all of us to come to the consensus that we had to strike out and start a business.  The Goblin King Ball was a phenomenal night not just for the fun we had, but it was the birth of the Three Fairies.  That moniker led to us choosing Fae’td Threads as our business name.  It encapsulates our spirit, love of fantasy, and most importantly that fate certainly did bring us together not just for our families, but so that we could share a unique journey together that we never would have expected.  We invite you to return often so that you can share in our journey and get to know and laugh right along with us.
